'Sounds of India' — 8-Track Multi-Genre Album Mixing & Mastering
Professional mixing and mastering of an 8-track compilation album featuring independent Indian artists across genres — from Carnatic fusion to Hindi hip-hop — for a major streaming platform's original content initiative.
The Challenge
A major streaming platform's editorial team curated 8 tracks from independent artists for a playlist spotlight. The tracks were recorded in vastly different studios (from bedroom setups to professional rooms) with inconsistent quality. They needed: each track mixed to professional streaming standards while preserving each artist's unique sound, cohesive mastering so the 8 tracks feel like an album despite different genres and recording conditions, masters optimized for loudness normalization (-14 LUFS), and fast 3-week turnaround across all 8 tracks.
The Approach
Started with a sonic assessment of each track, categorizing issues (phase problems, frequency masking, dynamic range, noise). Created a per-track mix plan. Mixing approach varied by genre: the Carnatic fusion track needed careful balance between veena and electronic bass; the hip-hop track needed punchy 808s and clear vocal presence; the folk-pop track needed warmth and space. Used parallel compression, mid-side EQ, and careful saturation to bring each track to streaming standards without killing dynamics. Mastered using a reference chain calibrated for streaming normalization — targeting -14 LUFS integrated while maintaining healthy dynamic range.
The Result
Album featured on the platform's homepage for 2 weeks. Combined streams exceeded 5 million in the first month. Three of the eight artists reported it was the best their music had ever sounded. The editorial team described the mastering consistency as 'exactly what we needed to make this feel like a unified release.'
Deliverables
“Eight completely different genres, eight different recording qualities — and Vivek made them all sound world-class while keeping each artist's identity intact. That's true mastering craft.”
